Compressed vs. expanded form
An IPv6 address has 8 groups of 4 hexadecimal digits. To make it shorter, it can be compressed: leading zeros in each group are dropped, and a single run of all-zero groups becomes ::. Example: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 is 2001:db8::1.
