Latency, Jitter and Packet Loss Test
Measure latency (ping), jitter and packet loss right in your browser to diagnose lag in games and video calls.
Measures the round-trip time (RTT) to this page's server with small repeated requests. Jitter = the variation from one request to the next.
Latency vs. jitter: not the same thing
Latency is the time a packet takes to go and come back (RTT). Jitter is the variation of that latency between packets. A call can have low latency (30 ms) but high jitter (±25 ms), and it is the jitter that ruins video calls and games, because the data arrives at irregular intervals.
2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz and packet loss
The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but shares the spectrum with microwaves, Bluetooth and the neighbors' network, increasing loss and jitter. The 5 GHz band has less interference and more bandwidth, ideal near the router. Loss above ~1-2% is already felt in games and VoIP.
| Optimal latency (games/VoIP) | < 30 ms |
| Acceptable latency | 30-80 ms |
| Good jitter | < 15 ms |
| Tolerable loss | < 1 % |
