KB is not KiB (and that's why your drive looks smaller)

There are two systems. The decimal one uses powers of 1000: 1 KB = 1000 bytes. The binary one uses 1024: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes. Drive makers sell in decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but the operating system usually shows binary, so a 1 TB drive appears as ~931 GiB. Nothing went missing: they are just two different rulers.

Networks and speeds use bits (Mbps); files use bytes (MB). 1 byte = 8 bits. This converter shows both sides at once.
